Probably not since George William Jorgensen Jr. (May 30, 1926 – May 3, 1989) tried to transform himself into “Christine” Jorgensen in the 1950s, has the world been obsessed with the attempt of a man to become a woman. Jorgensen’s attempted transformation became the main topic of the New York Daily News. Today, Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner has captured the attention of the globe.

The fascination the world has with such aberrant behavior, both then and now, is understandable, but misplaced, for nothing is done to help these desperate souls. It is proper to call these transgender people desperate, for that is the testimony of their own lips and lives. These poor souls live in a state of moral confusion, and social uncertainty. Normal people, who are good and decent, do not know whether to laugh, or cry, or put these individuals into a sanitarium for their own good, with a view towards the recovery of their mental and spiritual health. Of course, that will not be done. In the name of personal freedom, self-dignity, and tolerance, the dark side of the soul of these individuals will be allowed total expression.

If history is any guide about the ultimate fate of transgender personalities, the time will come when the moral fabric of society will become so saturated with sexual perversion that the moral pendulum will swing back to the basics of humanity. Men will once more be masculine men, and women will honor their God given femininity.

Caligula was the third Roman emperor (AD 37-41). He was viewed as a noble ruler for the first two years of his reign, and then the dark side of the soul caused him to become known for his extravagance, cruelty, and psychotic behavior. Part of his “new normal” behavior was to engage in incest, prostitution, pedophilia, and adultery. Julius Caesar had foreseen the feminine acting side of Caligula and mockingly applied to him the epithet, The Queen of Bithynia. The world will yet laugh once more at the silliness of a man to be a woman. The laughter will partly be that of collective self-conscience social shame that such behavior was tolerated.

Ancient Rome tolerated the antics of Messalina, the third wife of the Roman Emperor Claudius (AD 41-54), as she competed with prostitutes as to how many clients she could satisfy in one night. And then society rose up to say, “Enough.”

In more modern days, ask any German citizen if they are proud of the fact that Herman Goering, a German Ace during World War I, and head of the Luftwaffe during World War II, was known to enjoy having red lacquered fingernails and toenails on the 340 pounds he carried on his five foot six inch frame. Ask them if they want to honor him, and build a statue to him in every city as he bragged the people would, and they will turn away in disgust.

So, the time will come when the world will collect transgender individuals, and put them once more in a safe place for their moral and mental recovery, laugh at them, or turn away in disgust.

The church, of course, must have another reaction, and that is to love such lost souls. These people are to be loved in the name of Jesus Christ so that the gospel of redeeming grace can be shared. Their perversion is not greater than the love and grace of God. They too can be saved. They can be fundamentally and forever different. They can be what God created them to be, in His own image, and for His glory.

As Christians seek to share the gospel, the words of the apostle Paul are to be remembered. “For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another” (Titus 3:3). The reason why believers are to be gracious, meek, and gentle towards all, is because of what the heart was once by nature, and by choice. Christian’s confess that there is a dark side to every soul. Bruce Jenner may become fabulously rich in this new venture of life, estimates range up to $500,000, but what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul. To date, Bruce Jenner has sold his soul to the world, the flesh, and the devil.  He is advancing a radical political agenda. And, he is making a name for himself that will live in infamy, apart from a Christian conversion. It takes no moral courage for Bruce Jenner to do what he is doing. It takes more courage today to be a follower of Jesus Christ than it takes to pander to fleshly desires while seeking the applause of the world. Bruce Jenner’s reward in life might be the cover of Vanity Fair, but his eternal reward will be terribly different. May God grant him the grace that is needed to repent.
