There is a wonderful reference to the eyes of the Lord in the Authorized Version of the Bible. The phrase is used twenty-two times
Of course, the eyes of the Lord refer to an anthropomorphism. God is spirit. He has no physical eyes or any other material parts. Nor, does the Lord need them. God can accomplish all that He needs to accomplish by the power of His mind and will. With that in mind, consider what the Scriptures reveal about the eyes of the Lord.
The eyes of the Lord looked upon Noah to preserve him. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Gen. 6:8).
The eyes of the Lord will guide a nation to material prosperity. The Hebrew people were brought to, “A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year” (Deut. 11:12).
Individuals are expected to listen to the voice of God, to keep His commandments, and to do that which is right in the eyes of the Lord. “When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the Lord thy God” (Deut. 13:18).
The eyes of the Lord are associated with the safety and security of an individual. Speaking to King Saul, David said, “And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation (1 Sam. 26:24).
The eyes of the Lord assure the fulfillment of the plan of God. It was because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, his throne was established. “Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite” (1 Kgs. 15:5; 1 Chron. 14:2).
Another king, Asa, also “did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord as did David his father (1 Kgs. 15:5).
The eyes of the Lord speak of the essence of God. They display His omniscience. “For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth” (Zech. 4:10; 2 Chron. 16:9).
The eyes of the Lord assure divine protection for believers as He sees their every need. “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” (1 Peter 3:12).
The eyes of the Lord preserve truth throughout the ages, no matter how foolish the thoughts of men become. “The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor” (Prov. 22:12).
The eyes of the Lord discern between the righteous and the wicked. “O Lord, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return” (Jer. 5:3).
The redeemed are glorious in the eyes of the Lord. They always have been; they always will be. “And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength” (Isa. 49:5).
Much can be told by looking to the eyes. A doctor can look into the eyes and determine if there is good health, or a medical concern. On many occasions, a parent can look into the eyes of their child and discern if they are telling the truth.
Question: When the Lord looks upon you, when His eyes see the life you are living, what does God behold?
Let the Scripture answer: The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good (Prov. 15:3)
The eyes of the Lord know the future. That is enough to bring comfort to the heart of God’s people.
Known only to Him are the great hidden secrets
I’ll fear not the darkness when my flame shall dim
I know not what the future holds
