Editor’s note: Those familiar with the life of R.C. Sproul Jr. know that certain decisions in his personal life have caused scandal. The results of those choices have cost him dearly: overseeing a worldwide ministry, speaking engagements, associations, financial security, and his reputation, among others. Since his public downfall, R.C. Jr. has wept privately and confessed his sins to those in authority over him. Now, he openly confesses to all the ugly truth that marks each and every one of us—we need Jesus daily. R.C. begins his book by acknowledging his sins and then goes on to say: “Having repented and believed the gospel, what do I do now? Repent, believe the gospel, and proclaim the gospel that saves a wretch like me.”

Part of the good news of the gospel is that God does not casts sinners away after they sin, even if they sin scandalously. David was not sent away into obscurity after his very public sins. Peter was not discarded after his shocking public denial of the Master. And so too, we do not believe God does away with sinners after egregious sins. When the prodigal son returned home, it was his father—just like our heavenly Father—who was the true prodigal in the story in that he was the one who was “given to excess”, showering the offender with grace and mercy. The father did not relegate his son to obscurity, but, rather, placed him in a position of prominence.

Growing Up (With) R.C., according to Tullian Tchividjian, is “ultimately a composition about the God who meets our guilt with His grace, our sin with His salvation, our faults with His forgiveness, and our perversion with His purity; the God of repeat-offenders who irrevocably clothes us in a suit of righteousness.”

This book then is not for the righteous. It is for those who embrace the glorious message revealed in Scripture, believed and taught by R.C. Sr., and embraced and cherished by R.C. Jr. That is why we, Ichthus Publications, chose to publish R.C.’s story. Our desire in promoting this book is to promote its truthful and powerful message. It is a book whose message needs telling over and over again—“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!”

Ichthus Publications is announcing that R. C. Sproul Jr.’s Growing Up (With) R. C.: Truths I Learned About Grace, Redemption, and the Holiness of God is now available.

In Growing Up (With) R.C., Sproul offers a glimpse into the theological wisdom of one of the foremost influential theologians his generation. In so doing, he recounts the ordinary father-son relationship with his world-renowned father and how those conversations and interactions left a remarkable impression that informed R.C. Jr’s worldview and renewed his way of thinking about God and the world around him.

“What moves me,” says Sproul, “is when someone impresses upon me the glory of Christ. My father did that in spades, in all that he taught and in how he lived.”

Through “table talk”—ordinary back and forth in the context of every day life—R.C. Sproul poured forth extraordinary theological wisdom into a broken vessel living an ordinary life. You are invited to listen in on those exchanges, and to benefit from the wisdom of a father who loved his son, and loves His Son.

Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder and CEO of Joni and Friends, remarked about the famous father and son duo, “Theirs is an amazing story of a wise father and a searching son who both understand the power of Grace to change and heal. I highly recommend this wonderful book!”

Dr. George Grant, Pastor of Parish Presbyterian Church in Franklin, TN said, “R.C. Jr. has long been my friend and yokefellow. His father has long been my mentor and hero. Reading the story of their lives together made me laugh and cry, rejoice and repent. Somehow, R.C. Jr. writes with an exceedingly rare combination of Gospel humility and Gospel boldness. This book is not to be missed.”

Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. is a gifted teacher and frequent conference speaker who has served in various ministry roles both inside and outside the church. He has authored several books and series, including Economics for Everybody, Believing God, Tearing Down Strongholds, Bound for Glory, and The Call to Wonder.
