“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”—
Proverbs 14:12
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.” –Revelation 21:1
It is often difficult to have an intelligent, and reasonable conversation, in today’s society about religion, politics, the home, marriage, or morality, because civil discourse has not simply deteriorated; it has degenerated into ad hominem attacks, profanity, generalities, superlative statements, and meaningless clichés.
A professional lawyer talks to his client with profanity spewing from his lips, not in anger, but as a normal way of talking.
So many men and women can no longer carry on a healthy conversation, and convey a coherent thought, without taking the name of God in vain, or using the cheapest and most offensive words on their vile lips. Profanity has been turned into an idiom. There is the expression, “He cusses like a sailor.” Gordie Howe would change that expression. He noted, “All hockey players are bilingual. They know English and profanity. University of California Coach John Wooden, brought dignity to the sport of basketball. “I had three rules for my players: No profanity. Don’t criticize a teammate. Never be late.”
A gifted and professional doctor dismisses anyone he feels superior to, and speaks with a smirk on his lips, and contempt in his voice, to his inferiors.
A pastor moves to condemn and dismiss a basic Biblical and historic theological position he does not comprehend, but can only caricaturize.
A losing petty politician tells his supporters that he is proud of them, not with lofty words of eloquence, and hope for the next election, but in gutter language. The crowd cheers him on in defeat. The soul of society is corrupt.
A reporter stands to challenge, and debate the President of the United States. He does not stand to do his job, and gather information to inform society. The moment is about him.
A group of clueless political criminals go at night to the home of a Conservative commentator to torment and instill fear into his wife and children. They are moral cowards, and, in the words of C. S. Lewis, they are “men without chests,” though they proudly see themselves as virtuous. They vandalize property by leaving a crude and childishly drawn symbol of their Orwellian language.
It would be nice to think that the current incivility, well, “this is not who we are,” as one former American president loves to say. It would be nice to believe, “America is better than this,” as he chides the nation, after telling his followers that, “when others bring a knife to a fight, we bring a gun.” But America, and any nation, is only as good as the character of the people who make up its society.
An objective observer of present day American society would be compelled to concede that Robert H. Bork was prescient when he wrote his New York Times best seller, Slouching Towards Gomorrah. Said Judge Bork, “The enemy within is modern liberalism, a corrosive agent carrying a very different mood and agenda, than that of classical or traditional liberalism. That the modern variety is intellectually bankrupt, diminishes neither its vitality nor the danger it poses.”
Twenty two years after Judge Bork wrote this word of warning in 1996, America has arrived at Gomorrah. The morally corrosive agent and intellectual bankruptcy of Liberalism is painfully manifest in the public funding of unrestricted abortions, the pretentiousness that men are women, and people of the same sex can be married. Liberalism is socially and morally bankrupt at it promotes drugs, encourages the lack of civility in politics, and approves of the divorce rate. Liberalism defends the homosexual agenda, the promotion of identity politics, the removal of God from the public domain, the trashing of the Ten Commandments, the sexual exploitation of women and children, the refusal to give babies their biological identity at birth, excessive regulation, and the rise of Black Lives Matters, not to mention their Fascist comrades dressed in black.
Judge Bork anticipated the time would come in America when Progressive Liberals would openly advocate Socialism without shame. That time is now. Liberals have no shame in destroying America as it was founded. They are determined to remove personal freedoms, and the right to pursue happiness. Liberals have no shame that they have no logical answers to simple questions of practical concern.
For example, when 29 year old Bronx and Brooklyn, New York, Representative Ocasio Cortez was asked how to pay for her Socialist agenda, her response indicates she believes that money grows on trees and people can “just pay for it!” Of course! “Just pay for it!” No problem. Her response was so simple, and so “logical,” right?
Cortez wants Medicare for all, she just wants America to pay for it. Cortez wants “free” college for all, she just wants America to pay for it. Cortez wants a $15 minimum wage for all, she just want America to pay for it.
And who is this “America” that will “just pay for it?” Why, that is the collective America. The collective America has a lot of money, and Big Government wants it. Big Government is more than willing to confiscate the wealth of individuals through taxation. Once the wealth of the nation is concentrated in the hands of the few, 435 House Representatives, and 100 Senators, then they promise to wisely and justly redistribute the wealth of “America.” In this way “free” health care can be guaranteed for all, and “free” college education can be given to all. And what happens to the individual American? Well, the individual is just a drone worker to keep Big Brother, and Big Sister, in power in Big Government.
With that being noted, it is still good that Christians engage in earthly affairs, and do what we can to help individuals. The Lord has told us to go into all nations and make disciples.
While political pundits struggle to find a message for the masses, the good news of the gospel is for every tongue and tribe under heaven. There is a Saviour for sinners. There is peace with God through Christ. There can be a better tomorrow. It is not through Socialism, Liberalism, Communism, or the Progressive Agenda. It is not through Globalism. The earliest attempt at globalism was destroyed by the Lord (Genesis 11:1-9). A devout Christian will wish their own nation well, while being part of the world community. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12).
Christian, do not despair. This world is not our home, we are only passing through. Our eternal King is Jesus, and His kingdom is not of this world. It does not matter whichever way the political winds of time blow — towards Democracy or a Republic, Socialism or Communism, Libertarianism, or Nihilism. The kingdoms of this world do not alter our Christian faith, our ultimate future, or our glorious destiny. In Christ there is hope for a better tomorrow.
