As the Holy Spirit brings form out of chaos, He does so for a purpose, which is to make a temple for God to dwell. Consider the various places where the Holy Spirit works to fill a void for beauty and worship.
The whole creation. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.” (Psalms 19:1-2) In a church service there is the declaration of the word of God. There is the proclamation of His handiwork. There is an outpouring of speech. There is worship. Creation is designed to be a temple in which to worship God. Creation was not designed to be worshipped. It is sin which perverts the form of worship and turns attention from the Creator to the creation. The original intent of creation must be remembered. The Holy Spirit enables this to happen. The whole creation can once more be a temple of worship.
The spirit of man. God the Holy Spirit dwells in the spirit of man. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Gen. 1:26) Man was created to be a worship leader in the temple of creation.
The Wilderness Tabernacles. The Spirit of God indwelt those who fashioned the Tabernacle, so that a place could be established where the Lord would meet with His people. “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” (Ex. 25:8)
The Womb of the Virgin Mary. “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35) The Lord Jesus becomes the Temple of God in whom we can meet with God.
The Body of the Believer. “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Cor. 6:19-20)
The Whole Church. The Holy Spirit dwells in the whole Church. “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” (Acts 2:38-39)
The New World. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” (Rev. 22:17)
Rejoice Christian, affirm the historic faith of the Church, and say, “I believe in the Holy Spirit.” (Apostle’s Creed)
