A basic tenant of modern Western societies is that there should be a separation between church and state (which generally amounts to little more than a prohibition of religious expression). On a practical level, though, the idea that religion should have no part in the affairs of government is, quite simply, impossible. The current crisis in America over the Affordable Care Act and the deception involved in passing the bill and the subsequent promoting of it offers a classic illustration of the impossibility of a nation to separate morality and ethics from government.

It is possible to “spin” the words of a person who lies, but only by perpetuating another falsehood. Nevertheless, in time, reality always catches up with the rhetoric, and all the falsehoods, all the imaged “hope and change,” is seen to be a “house of cards,” a “sand castle,” a “mirage,” or whatever metaphor one wishes to use.

There are four basic reasons why America faces an uncertain future, and is in danger of national collapse to the point it will be swept into the dustbin of history, along with more than twenty other, once majestic, societies such as the Sumerian Empire, the Hittite Empire, the Assyrian Empire, the Babylonian Empire, the Greek Empire, and the Roman Empire.

First, America has officially turned her back on God. The year was 1963. In the month of June, the Supreme Court of the United States of America upheld the argument of the atheist Madelyn Murray O’Hare to insure that God would be evicted from public society, and officially erased from all facets of governmental life. The enemies of God were, and are, determined that He should not reign over them (Luke 19:27).

Second, America is legally killing the innocent. As society talks about a war on drugs, or a war on women, there is a real physical war being waged, day by day, upon boys and girls before they are born. Since January 22, 1973, the slaughter of the weakest members of society has continued in earnest and unabated. Abortion-mills, such as Planned Parenthood, disguise their bloody and vile work with the euphemistic phrase, “pro-choice.”

Third, America has become a greedy nation. In two national elections, scores of millions of individuals voted for a person who promised to take care of them from the cradle to the grave. The allure of a welfare state was too great to resist for the natural corruption rooted in the hearts of millions. Only recently are people realizing that the government cannot deliver on its promise. Only too late is it realized that multitudes believed a lie. Jesus was once told by Satan that if He would only fall down and worship the devil, He would receive the kingdoms of this world (Matthew 4:8, 9). When that same offer was made to the American citizens of this nation in 2008, and in 2012, multitudes believed the lie. They coveted what others have. By legal force, by governmental coercion, with the permission of a morally corrupt citizenship, what belongs to others was to be taken and redistributed in the name of social justice. And the people rejoiced at the possibility of that happening.

Fourth, America has officially become a nation of liars. When the highest echelons of government lies about the death of citizens in Benghazi, lies about targeting conservative political groups for harassment, lies about secret negotiations with terrorist organizations, lies about selling weapons of death to the nations enemies in order to track the weapons, lies about secret treaties made with other nations, and lies about its health care law, then the whole body politic is infected. On March 21, 1973, White House Counsel John Dean tried to warn former President Richard Nixon that a cancer was growing on the presidency. Mr. Nixon did not listen and his presidency was destroyed.

The church must try to warn the current president, and all the people in America, that a spiritual cancer is growing in society that will bring certain destruction and death, politically, morally, socially, and physically. When John the Baptist saw moral corruption in Israel in the persons of Herodias and Herod Antipas, he did not remain silent but spoke up in protest over that behavior (Matthew 14:1-5).

In like manner, the church must find her voice to say to the White House and to the nation: “We must officially repent and turn back to God. We must stop the butchering of our babies. We must not covet. We must not lie to one another or believe the lies we are told.”

Only by exalting Christ, only by embracing and emphasizing Christianity, can America hope to survive as a nation and be blessed. “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him” (Col. 3:9).
